Park Circle Intersection
Baltimore, MD
Park Circle Intersection, originally designed as a traffic circle by Frederick Law Olmsted, had evolved into a confusing and unsafe intersection prior to reconstruction. Due to the grades and accessibility considerations, it was determined that a full reconstruction of the intersection to a true traffic circle was not feasible.
PELA recommended the incorporation of a circular geometry for the paving and site seating, and strategically placed plant materials to recreate the circular ambiance of the space.
A noteworthy aspect of the design is the integration of bio-retention areas into the streetscape, achieved by positioning them behind the circular seat wall and replicating its circular geometry.
