Charles Street Reconstruction and Streetscape

PELA prepared the streetscape concept and the construction documents for the landscape architectural design for Charles Street Reconstruction Project, from 25th Street to University Boulevard along the frontage of Johns Hopkins University. The landscape design features include median planting, intersection enhancements, street tree planting, and other accent planting with seasonal interest.

A special feature is the Art Plaza located between 33rd Street and 34th Street, in front of the bank, shops and student housing. The widened walkway area was graded to slope toward a central channel conveying rainwater through a series of rain gardens. Metal and stone benches are strategically placed. Native, low maintenance, drought and salt tolerant plants are selected for the entire composition. This artistic expression of rainwater creates a special place as part of the experience of the new Charles Street. The Art Plaza was designed via the joint effort of the landscape architect and the artist.

PELA provided specification, cost estimate, and construction phase services. This is truly the integration of public art and green infrastructure into the streetscape. Other notable improvements are the landscape enhancements at each major intersection with paver and striped crosswalks, new pedestrian ramps, and ornamental plantings with seasonal interests are proposed.
